In 1950, Paul was employed as a welder for a farm implement factory.

H, earning the rank of Corporal. Pauline's nephew Paul Edward Fliehler (b. 1902 St. Sebald, IA - d. 1942 Madang, Papua New Guinea) was a martyred ELC missionary where he had served since 1927 (initially in Gabmazung) after marrying Bertha Theresa Knoernschild of Brisbane, [[Australia]] (who died on the field in 1931 of H.G. during pregnancy). By 1942, the two Protestant missions in Finschhafen & Madang together claimed to have baptized over 60k adherents. The IJA occupied Madang on Dec. 18, 1942 and a week later imprisoned 19 missionaries including Paul who was serving as superintendent of the mission, as well as 18 others including 10 other Americans. By mid-1944, five had been released, eight were dead and six were unknown fate including Paul.
