Robert Dawson (1927-2014) was in fellowship with [[Westlawn Gospel Chapel, IL|Westlawn Gospel Chapel]] in its early years in the 1950's, and with his wife Rachael, moved to [[California#Compton|Compton]] in the Gate Cities region of Los Angeles, [[California]] starting a Sunday School work that evolved by 1963 into Compton Bible Chapel which initially met in his home, before moving to Union Gospel Mission.
In 1969, the church became affiliated with the Evangelical Covenant group, the first predominantly African-American church in that denomination. It folded in 2008.
