Alex was a ship carpenter whose firm had a route between Glasgow & Montreal, and one day he was in Montreal, and a street preacher from the assembly shared the Gospel with him, and he turned his life over to Christ there on the spot, and was given a French-English New Testament, and he joined the assemblies in Scotland, then moved to Montreal with his family in 18751890. A number of visiting brethren resided with the Mearns family in Montreal including a stonecutter named William Dawson '''+1891+''' (b. 1871 Scot.) and Rose Stuwarin(?) '''+1901+''' (b. 1836 [[Switzerland]]). In 1911, three Methodists boarded there also: Patree Smith (b. 1890 QC), John Loyd (b. 1889 QC) and William Loyd (b. 1889 [[England]]).
