''The Windsor Star'' [https://www.newspapers.com/image/499054488 1897-1-5] ran an obit for Charles with the title "A Noted Lawyer Dead", followed by "Chas. E. Pegley of Chatham passes away after a long illness" subtitle. Continuing, "C.E. Pegley, Q.C., of Chatham, died on Sunday morning after an illness which has extended over a long period. His death removes one of the ablest men of the Canadian Bar, and a very successful criminal lawyer. The deceased gentleman was the son of the late Capt. Pegley, a British officer, and was born at Mount Torrance, near the town of Peterboro', 59 years ago. He entered the law office of Walter McCrae, afterwards Judge McCrae, at the age of 17, was called to the bar in 1862, and made a Q.C. in 1890. He was a partner with C.R. Atkinson, Q.C., for some years, afterwards practicing alone. The deceased gentleman leaves a widow and five sons, Charles, Gerald, and William, [[New York]]; Roland, St. Paul, Minn., and Torrance, at home. The funeral took place today to Maple Leaf cemetery." He was CoE by 1891.
