August Martin Hasse was born around 1902 near Hoboken, New Jersey to Martin August (1873-1956) and Julia Elizabeth Mann Hasse (1876-1949) in New Jersey.  Julia's parents were Elizabeth Ortmann Mann, and both raised in Austria. August's siblings were:

  • Julia Elizabeth Hasse Dibble (b. 1897) married Raymond Townsend Dibble, and served the Lord together in Northern Nigeria. Their children included Spencer James Dibble (b. 1921)
  • Teresa Elizabeth Hasse (1900-1918). Her marker has "Jesus died for me" above her name.
  • John Hasse (1904-1992)
  • Samuel Hasse (b. 1912)

Life and Ministry

August was saved as a boy in the Jersey City assembly. After a period of "deep soul exercise", he was led by the Lord into full time service. He accompanied Harold Milton Harper for several years preaching the Gospel in remote areas, including at Memorial Day services at Grace Gospel Chapel, Plumsteadville, PA which Harold helped found. This ministry with Harold Harper also includes Harvey Gospel Hall, ND which included evangelistic meetings in the English Congregational Church on 9th & Adams. August was eventually led to minister in Virginia, carrying the Gospel into seldom reached places.

Marriage and Family

On March 21, 1930, he married Augusta Frances Jenkins, also known as Gussie. She was born in 1903 in Nethers, Virginia on a farm to Henry Pierce Jenkins (1868-1925) and Ada Blanche Gates (1881-1970). They had one son, James August Hasse, born in 1934, who in 1961 married Doris Burdett Jenkins, they live in Sperryville, Virginia which is where Augusta spent her own final years. James has served in the leadership with McKinley Jenkins at Sunnybrook Gospel Chapel, VA, founded in 1952 by Mr. and Mrs. Ermal Robinson.

Harold Samuel Jenkins

July 1945 Light & Liberty reported an obit for Pfc. Harold Samuel Jenkins who was killed in action in Germany on March 22, 1945, after having been overseas for two months. The link will have more information.   He was one of eight siblings of August's wife.

Final Years

While pitching a tent for Gospel work in 1944, his heart was weakened, related to a childhood rheumatic fever. He improved for awhile, but ultimately was limited his last two years to ministering within his home district. Harold wrote, "He was an earnest and devoted servant of Christ and his ministry was owned and blessed of the Lord to many who found Christ thereby. Thus another pioneer has gone on to be with Christ. Who will take up this needy work?"

Samuel died on September 29, 1943 in Hopatcong, New Jersey.  Harold Harper wrote the obituary for Light and Liberty. Large services were held in the Summit Avenue Hall, NJ in Jersey City with Harold Harper and George MacLachlan ministering.
