Childhood
Dr. Edmund Rector Woodside was born Nov. 22, 1921 in Lodi, California.
His father was Homer Henry Woodside, Jr. (b. Dec. 21, 1893 Sonora, CA - d. Nov. 16, 1981 Riverside, CA). He was a veteran of World War One. In the 1930's, Homer was a bookkeeper for the Cotton Seed Oil Co., while living in Madera, CA. In the 1940's for E.V. Fallgren at the Royal Palm Hotel in Los Angeles, while living in Pasadena.
Edmund's mother was Mary Augusta Rector Woodside (b. Jan. 7, 1898 Dry Fork, Randolph, WV - d. Nov. 26, 1986 Riverside, CA). Mary's father was Charles Henry Rector (b. Sept. 1854 WV), a lumber dealer. Mary's mother was August Emery Mackin Rector (1861-1955).
He had one sister, Agnes Woodside Duntley (b. 1929) who lives in Seattle, Washington.
Conversion and Intro to the Brethren
He was raised in a Christian home, and "early accepted the claims of Christ". He began fellowshiping with the Brethren after World War Two in the southern California area. For many years he was actively involved in local bible studies, church planting, and serving the missionary community as a local correspondent. He was also a Bible teacher at Pomona Bible Chapel
Education and Military Service
Edmund attended the University of Redlands for his undergraduate studies, which were interrupted by World War Two. He enlisted on Sept. 28, 1942 in the U.S. Army Air Force with the weather service, and served thru Nov. 17, 1945. He was stationed in the Pacific, and frequently accompanied the chaplain and played the cornet at chapel programs. His service with the AAC ended Nov. 17, 1945, and he resumed his studies at the University of Redlands, earning his B.S. in 1946, and his M.A. in 1950. He later earned his doctorate at the University of Southern California.
Marriage
Edmund was first married on July 19, 1943 to Mary Ellen Slater at the Lincoln Avenue Presbyterian Church in Pasadena. She died in Los Angeles on June 13, 1976. On Feb. 14, 1981, Edmund remarried Dorothy A. Wells (b. 1922) in Los Angeles, CA.

Occupation
Edmund taught Greek at the California Center for Biblical Studies 1972-1983.

Death
Edmund died in Pasadena, CA on Dec. 15, 1985 at the age of 64. He was enroute to picking up his wife Dorothy from the hospital after her surgery, and died of a spontaneous introcerebral hemorrhage. His family had asked for memorial contributions to be made to the American Scientific Affiliation in Ipswich, MA.
At the memorial service it was said of him that he "studied and knew the Scriptures. Whether leading in worship or a Bible study, one thing that made him different from most was that 'never a cliche came out of his mouth.' He always had something fresh to say, some new insight into the Scriptures that he loved."
