Ibzan Rice Dean was an itinerant evangelist, with the Open Brethren, and later pastored a church in Toronto, Ontario known as Tabernacle. He was born Mar. 5, 1855 in Anderson, S.C. and died on April 4, 1928 in Los Angeles, CA.

Family

He was a son of Major John Dean (b. 1831 Anderson, S.C. - d. 1902 Tyler, Smith, TX) & Frances "Fannie" Clarenda Rice Dean (b. 1833 Anderson, S.C. - d. 1876 Tyler, TX). His brother was another noted Brethren evangelist, John Thomas Dean (b. 1853 Anderson, S.C. - d. 1918 Houston, TX), credited with the earliest open assemblies in Dallas, including Polk Street Gospel Hall, from which spawned (1st-3rd generation) many of the present assemblies and independents with PB roots.

Paternal

Major John Dean was a son of Moses Dean (b. 1798 Pendleton, Anderson, S.C. - d. 1878 Starr, Anderson, S.C.) & Evaline Narcissa Lewis Dean (b. 1804 Dean's Station, Rock Mills, Anderson, S.C. - d. 1883 Starr, S.C.). All four of Moses' sons fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War. Moses' father was Samuel B. Dean (b. 1751 Cumberland, Adams, PA - d. 1826 Starr, Anderson, S.C.). Samuel's great-grandparents were Walter Deane (b. 1612 Chard, Somerset, Eng. - d. 1693 Taunton, Bristol, MA) & Eleanor Strong Deane (b. 1613 Chard, Eng. - d. 1693 Taunton, MA), who married in 1630 at Taunton.

Their son John Deane, a brother of Major's direct ancestor, was the first English child born in Taunton, in 1639, the same year that the town incorporated. The original Deane homestead was located on present-day Dean Street, near Longmeadow Nursing Home. Walter Deane, as well as John Strong (Eleanor's brother), are among the seven founders of Taunton, known in 1836 as Cohannett.

Narcissa's father was Marah Lewis (b. 1772 Leesburg, Loudoun, VA - d. 1837 Anderson Co., S.C.) and among the founders of Rock Mill, and later Anderson, S.C. Marah's father was Major William Baylis Lewis, Sr. (b. 1740 Ireland - d. 1812 White Co., TN), a Patriot of the Revolutionary War. See FindAGrave for his military record.

Maternal

Ibzan's mother's furthest traceable paternal ancestor was Edward Rice (b. 1495 Dingle, Kerry, Munster, ROI), a settlement location for the Rice family for five subsequent generations. The ancestor to settle in America was Edmund Rice (b. 1594 Barkhamstead, Hertfordshire, Eng. - d. 1663 Sudbury, MA), he emigrated early in 1638, initially settling at Watertown, then among the first to build at Wayland, now Sudbury. Later in life he was one of thirteen petitioners for the founding of Marlborough. See Wikipedia.

Marriage

He married Jennie Belle Soward (b. 1862 Canton, Lewis, MO - d. 1945 Los Angeles, CA), daughter of Judge Charles Soward (b. 1837 KY) & Mary E. Soward (b. 1832 KY - d. 1911 Wise Co., TX).
