Thomas Edgar Chambers

Thomas Edgar Chambers was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on July 19, 1922 and came to the U.S. when he was four, his family settled at 18 Sherman Ave., Morristown, New Jersey. Edgar remained in Morristown until 1960 when he relocated to Wyckoff where he lived the remainder of his life. In his younger years, he had blonde hair and gray eyes, with a light complexion. He was the only child of his parents, the son of Thomas J. Chambers, a housepainter. His mother's name was Ann.

  • He was working in 1942 for Thomas Van Yperen @ 218 Central Ave., Hawthorne, N.J., a painter and wallpaper hanger.
    • Van Yperen was born in 1893 in the Netherlands, emigrating to the U.S. in 1910, a member of "Hawthorne Gospel Church" where he served as a treasurer of its Men's Bible Class. His wife was Henrietta Rozeboom (d. 1956). Van Yperen died in 1970, with donations requested for his church's radio fund. Hawthorne Gospel Church was a fruit of Billy Sunday's campaigns in 1915, and more info can be found at their website.

Conversion

He came to Christ at the age of 16 thru reading a gospel paper, and entered fellowship early on in open brethren assemblies, where he remained for life.

Marriage

Edgar married Ruth Batterson of Waterbury, Connecticut, in 1951, they have two sons, Mark and Ted.

Longport Gospel Home

He and his wife Ruth (Batterson) Chambers also served in leadership in the 1980's at the Longport Gospel Hall Home (near Atlantic City), NJ, serving as treasurer and officiated some of the funeral services of residents. See Longport's "Who's Who" section.

Career

In 1941 he went to work as an accountant for the "American Cyanamid Company", located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in NYC, New York, which was credited for the development of everything from Centrum multivitamins, to Old Spice cologne, to Pine-Sol. In the 1970's-1980's, it was in the Top 100 manufacturing companies, according to Fortune 500, and eventually primarily acquired by Pfizer, initially famous for providing penicillin to Allied soldiers in WWII, but as of 2020, for their COVID research.

Death

On January 25, 2021, Edgar was laid to rest, with wife surviving, as well as two sons, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
