He was the son of Duncan Gillies who emigrated to Canada in 1818, settling in Dundee, Huntingdon, QC. Archibald studied at the academy at Fort Covington, NY, which is where he was converted, and baptized by Elder Safford on Sept. 11, 1831. Then entered the Baptist college in Montreal. Made a missionary tour during his summer vacation of 1841 and ministered in the Eaton area in Mr. William Stone's barnfor a "large and attentive congregation", and also on a Sunday morning at the Congregational church in Eaton, preaching both places on Psalms 84:11.
He pastored Eaton Baptist 1842Church 1841-1882+1878, and was noted in the early years as having taken many long rides on horseback over rough roads and all kinds of weather in the early days of his ministry. Money was scarce, at his fortieth anniversary, Archibald remarked "it was easier to raise five thousand dollars than twelve dollars forty years before."
"He was prayerful, spiritual and empathetic; an able expounder of the Word, with which he had rare acquaintance. His preaching was with great earnestness, plainness and simplicity. The church he served so long is still (at 1896) reaping the fruits of his pure, devoted life.
