William was employed in 1910 managing his father-in-law Caleb J. Baker's tent/awning business "Baker-Lockwood Co.) in KCMO. William's parents settled initially in Watcheer, [[Iowa]]. William studied mine engineering in school, becoming an expert in that field, then settled in KCMO in 1895, starting for Baker-Lockwood as an elevator operator, and was last as its president, and in fellowship with the [[Troost Avenue Gospel Hall, KCMO]]. Baker-Lockwood was founded in 1888. Dr. Walter L. Wilson, co-founder of Calvary Bible College, was brother-in-law to Jessie Sommerville.
Pallbearers (active & honorary) at William Sommerville's memorial service were all employees of Baker-Lockwood, including W.L. Mellor, J.F. Rodabaugh, Forrest E. Gill, George Andrews, Will Leishman, George Parker, Sterling Short, Roy Smith, Bert Capp, A.A. Larned, Edward Armfield & A.I. Graham.
