Alex was a ship carpenter whose firm had a route between Glasgow & Montreal, and one day he was in Montreal, and a street preacher from the assembly shared the Gospel with him, and he turned his life over to Christ there on the spot, and was given a French-English New Testament, and he joined the assemblies in Scotland, then moved to Montreal with his family in 1875. Alex wife Maggie's grandfather James Morton '''1890-1901+''' (b. 1823 Scot.; emig. 1890) was employed in Montreal in 1901 as a master mariner. Also in 1901, Alex & Maggie had a boarder named Rose Stuwarin '''+1901+''' (b. 1836 [[Switzerland|Switz.]]) in fellowship with them.
