Armistead's paternal grandfather was William Taylor Barry (b. 1784 Lunenburg, VA - d. 1835 Liverpool, England), who in 1829 was appointed U.S. Postmaster General by President Andrew Jackson, and the only member of the Cabinet to remain in office after the "Petticoat Affair" which induced other cabinet secretaries to resign, as per [https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/6893946/william-taylor-barry FindAGrave]. In 1835, he was appointed the U.S. Ambassador to Spain, but enroute he died in London.
